The Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. (Romans 8:26)
We may not know how to pray, but God knows how to answer our prayers. Have you ever gotten to the point in your prayer life that all you could do is groan? It may appear or feel as if you are failing in your prayers, but our text says that it is at these times that the Holy Spirit intercedes.
One of the many things wonderful about prayer is that, “Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”(1) Even though we may be novices at prayer, the Holy Sprit is perfect in His intercession as we pray. Therefore, “Pray without ceasing.”(2) Pray as our Lord taught His disciples to pray in Luke, chapter 11 and Matthew, chapter 6. Read the prayers that are found throughout the scriptures.
One thing I have found that helps me pray is to pray a specific length of time (seven minutes) and for a specific need. Prayer is a discipline and often a battle. Consider Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane.
