Yet there shall be a space between you and it… Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you must go, for you have not passed this way before. (Joshua 3:4)
Let leadership lead. This was the message from the Lord Joshua was to give to the people. There was and is a strong tendency to draw very close to those who lead us. Most of us want to be near the core of the decision making process. Nevertheless, the novice and the rookie are to follow at a distance. There is to be a gap between the beginner and the experienced leaders. Whenever the inexperienced get too close to leadership, fear and doubt often creep in and hinder the direction. If you are new to an endeavor, follow at a safe distance. Heed the alignment set by the established government. Follow the chain of command. For you have not passed this way before. As we gain experience, trust and confidence, we can draw closer to the front lines. The way to the front comes through the passing of time, the school of experience and the trying of patience.
