Title

The Power Of The Appeal

Scripture
Therefore, though I might be very bold in Christ to command you what is fitting, yet for love’s sake I rather appeal to you…
(Philemon 1:8-9)
Devotional
What a powerful lesson. Paul, the Great Lion of God, could have commanded Philemon to pardon Onesimus; nevertheless he appealed to him. When dealing with each other, the appeal works better than a demand. Furthermore, there is an art to the appeal. Paul used it wisely here. He appealed to Philemon, reminding him of their friendship and position. He offered to pay the price for his request. Whether in the home, business, or the church, the art of the appeal is priceless. For example, the appeal is the number one tool for wives when attempting to petition their husbands. It is far better than nagging. It excels arguing, and even beats out crying. There is simply no defense against a wise appeal. The appeal disarms, softens, and honors. Used wisely, it eliminates harsh resistance. Therefore, even if you have the power to demand, for love’s sake appeal.
