Lest You Drift Away

Scripture
Therefore, we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.
(Hebrews 2:1)
Devotional
I know of no more profound fact about human nature than this:  man must be continually motivated to do good, because idleness will motivate him to do evil. In every realm, we must give earnest heed to the things we have heard. If we do not, the law of atrophy will quickly set in. Anything left to itself will eventually deteriorate. It does not matter if it is mechanical or biological, financial or spiritual, if unnurtured, it will drift away. Therefore, we are to listen diligently, learn what we have heard, apply it, and often review it. God knows that once is not enough.  That is why there are four gospels. If you remove the repetition from the Bible, it would be a very small book. However, it is through its repetition that its truths are imbedded into our lives. Therefore, give more earnest heed to the things you have heard, lest you drift away.
