Illegitimate Questions

Scripture
He kept silent and answered nothing.
(Mark 14:61)
Devotional
Not every question merits or deserves an answer. There are illegitimate questions. Those who "questioned" Christ were not seeking information they were making indictments. It is one thing to ask a question it is quite another to question. Whenever Jesus was asked a genuine question, He responded immediately and clearly. Whenever His integrity was being questioned He responded with either silence or a legitimate inquiry. When His authority was questioned, He in turn questioned the authority of those who claimed to have authority. If His legitimate question was not answered He responded by saying, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."[23] Let us likewise learn to distinguish the difference between an honest question and a maligning question. One is in search of a truthful answer the other is used to make critical indictment. Therefore neither ask such questions nor give answer to them. Either remain silent with or question the questioner with integrity.
