Title

Peter Was Alone

Scripture
Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, "You are not also one of this Man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not."
(John 18:17)
Devotional
This is the same man who said: "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!"[19] "Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be."[20] "See, we have left all and followed You."[21] This same Peter just a few hours earlier, "Having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear."[22] How is it that we can be so brave one instant and so very fearful the next? What caused Peter to stand firm against a detachment of troops, yet cower in the presence of a servant girl? During Peter's times of firmness and bravery the disciples were with Jesus. Now He was taken away; they were alone. Sureness and courage comes easier in a crowd than it does standing alone. Once Peter saw the risen Christ and heard Jesus say, "I will never leave you nor forsake you,"[23] he followed Him without wavering, even to the point of suffering a martyr's death.
