The Road To Leadership

Scripture
The Lord said to Joshua, “This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel…
(Joshua 3:7)
Devotional
When the Lord installs leadership, he promotes it. Joshua had been at the right hand of Moses. He was chosen by God through Moses to take over the leadership of the nation of Israel. Yet, it was the Lord’s work to exalt him, not Joshua’s. Furthermore, the Lord did not immediately edify Joshua. Our text says that He began to exalt him. There are several clear lessons in this text. We are not to exalt ourselves. Proverbs says, “Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.” Furthermore, when the Lord promotes, He does so gradually. “This day I will begin to exalt you.” Most of us want everything to happen instantaneously. Nevertheless, God is never in a hurry. His timing is always perfect. The psalmist said, “Wait on the Lord, be of good courage.…” Leadership will always rise to the occasion, but it falls if it jumps.
