The Danger Of Comfort

Scripture
Now it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom and had strengthened himself, that he forsook the law of the Lord…
(2 Chronicles 12:1)
Devotional
There is danger in comfort. It seems that when people prosper and are at ease that they fall into spiritual poverty and apathy. Because of this God-less attitude, Rehoboam nearly lost the kingdom. Later on we read that, “When he humbled himself, the wrath of the Lord turned from him, so as not to destroy him completely.” The unfortunate fact is that he nearly lost everything. Rehoboam never returned to his former glory. This is the way of man. It seems that when God blesses, we turn from him and lean on our own understanding. Therefore, God has no choice other than to remove His blessings, that we might humble ourselves and return to His good favor. However, seldom are we able to return to our former state. The key is, do not turn away from Him at all. When He blesses, instead of seeing it as means for comfort, see it as a means for serving and glorifying His holy Name.
