Title

Our Diet of Words

Scripture
Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.
(Matthew 15:11)
Devotional
The words that come out of our mouths can be more poisonous than anything that may enter them can. Jesus said, “By your words you will be justified and by your words you will be condemned.” I have learned to be careful with regard to what I eat and drink. I find that the older I get the less I am able to eat and drink. Likewise, I find that the older I get in Christ the closer I must watch the diet of my words. As what I eat counts with regard to my physical health, what I say matters even more with regard to my spiritual well-being. As spoiled food can upset the stomach, defiled speech can upset the soul. I have likewise found that what I permit to enter into my mind and heart will eventually work its way out of my mouth. Therefore, it is not what goes into the stomach, but that which proceeds from the things I have allowed in my heart that defiles a me.
