Title

Mary's Treasure

Scripture
Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.
(Luke 2:19)
Devotional
Mary was truly blessed among women. Why did God choose this young Jewish girl to bring His Son into the world? She obviously had several godly qualities: her humility, obedience, honoring her parents, and keeping all the commandments. However, there is another attribute she had that is revealed in Luke's gospel; she treasured the life of her Son. The word pondered is often translated treasured-“She treasured them in her heart.” Mary was not amazed by the events of Christ's life; she was in awe of them. She treasured the words of Gabriel and of the shepherds and above all her Son.

When Jesus was a boy of twelve He was unintentionally left behind in Jerusalem. When they finally found Him, He was in the temple speaking with the religious leaders. When Mary asked Him where He had been, He responded: “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business?” Mary, we are told. simply “ kept all these things in her heart.”(1) Do you ponder and treasure the things of God?

Thought For The Night

Meditation is the activity of calling to mind, thinking over, dwelling on, and applying to oneself the various things one knows about the works and ways and purpose and promises of God…. Its purpose is to clear one’s mental and spiritual vision of God, and to let his truth make its full and proper impact on one’s mind and heart.” J. I. Packer, Knowing God (InterVarsity Press, 1973), pp. 18-19
