Title

Positive and Negative Pride

Scripture
Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
(Proverbs 16:19)
Devotional
When asked what he thought was the greatest sin of mankind, Dr. Billy Graham answered, “Pride.” Pride is what caused Lucifer to fall and become known as Satan. Pride is the number one cause of unforgivness and warring. I wish we had a more positive word to use for expressing the pleasure we have when those we love accomplish exceptional deeds and behavior, but to the best of my knowledge we do not. Therefore, we have to attribute to the word “Pride” both a positive as well as a negative connotation. In our text it is used in the negative. Here we have the arrogant, self-serving pride of the wicked. Therefore, it is far better to be with the humble in spirit than reap the spoils of the prideful. The question we have to ask ourselves is “What kind of pride dominates my life?” Am I proud of godliness in those that I love? Or, am I selfishly, arrogantly proud of who I am without the need of God in my life?
