Title

When Leaders Reject Counsel

Scripture
If you will be a servant to these people today, and serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.
(1 Kings 12:7)
Devotional
Rehoboam rejected the wise counsel of the elders and listened to the foolish counsel of his young peers, and therefore lost ten of the twelve tribes of Israel. Whenever we are called to lead, we would be very wise to heed the counsel given to Solomon’s son, Rehoboam. The first duty of leadership to those being led is to serve them. The greatest leaders lead by example. They give the most and pay the greatest cost. They answer the needs of those being led and speak to them in an edifying manner. The foolish leader is curt and caustic. He attempts to lead through intimidation. The purpose of leadership is for those being led to achieve their calling, not merely the will of the leader. The purpose of those being led is not to serve the leader, but to serve the purpose of the leader. Are you called to lead? Serve and edify!
