Do Not Be Discharged From Your Word

Scripture
Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, please…” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!”

Devotional
Faithfulness should not be driven off by a simple request. However, mankind for the most part will easily relinquish faithfulness when given the opportunity. We seem to so easily accept being let off of the proverbial hook. Whether it is a debt owed or a promise made, we should not readily accept relief from our obligations. A promise made ought to be a promise kept. Yet we so easily accept a pardon. Marriage vows, business agreements and various contracts are often nullified with a “That’s OK’” or a “Never Mind.” We so easily succumb to unmerited clemency. Our faithfulness will prove to be evident. When we are offered release from an obligation, it will most likely be because we are communicating our unfaithfulness. Our attitude and body language will broadcast our desire to be dismissed from our pledge. Therefore, even if momentarily desired, resist the temptation to be discharged from your word.
