Title

A Proud Heart Is An Ugly Heart

Scripture
Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord. Though they join forces, none will go unpunished.
(Proverbs 16:5)
Devotional
Man sees and usually judges superficially. God says that man looks at the outward appearance, but He looks at the heart. Recently a friend shared an experience he had with his children. A gentleman with a horrid disease that disfigured his face visited our mid-week church service. He was a wonderful man, but he was so grotesque that he was frightening not only to children, but to all who saw him. My friend explained to his children that God did not intend man to ever be grotesque; but because of the sin of Adam, mankind has become tainted. He said to his children, “Just as this man is repulsive to look at, that is how a sinful heart appears to God-repulsive. A sinful heart is an ugly heart. We see the outside of this man, but God sees his heart, and God says that righteous heart is beautiful.

“People are like stained glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out. But in the darkness, beauty is seen only if there is a light within.” Unknown

Defining:  “Ugly” “Offensive to the sight; contrary to beauty; hateful; as an ugly person; an ugly face. ‘O I have pass'd a miserable night, so full of ugly sights, of ghastly dreams. Fellow, begone; I cannot bear thy sight; this news hath made thee a most ugly man,’” Noah Webster’s 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language.

Referencing: “Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness,” Psalm 29:2.

Applying: As is beauty, so is ugliness; it is in the eye of the beholder. Endeavor to see that which is beautiful to God as beautiful and that which is ugly to Him as ugly.
