Title

The Eleventh Commandment

Scripture
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
(John 13:34)
Devotional
The eleventh commandment will cause us to fulfill all the others. The apostle Paul said to the Romans, “Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.”(1)
We are not only to love one another; we are to love one another as Christ loved us. Man’s love is often fickle. God’s love is perfect. This is the kind of love we are to seek. If we can learn to love as Jesus loved, we will always endeavor to help instead of hinder. We will be careful instead of careless. There will never be an ulterior motive to our actions. We will say what we mean and mean what we say, and will always do it out of a heart of love. And we will find great favor with both God and man. This great commandment may seem out of reach. It is not. You see, love is something we do purposefully. It is commanded. Therefore it can be accomplished.

Thought For The Night

Those of us who carry the name Christian, but fail to act like the one whose name we bear, create confusion and disillusionment for those who have yet to believe. ‘By this, all men will know you are my disciples, if you love one another, (John 13:35).” Ed Rowell, pastor and writer, Franklin, Tennessee

Defining: “God’s love,” in a word “perfect.” To truly define love is to define God. Love’s attributes are most clearly defined in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8.

Referencing: “this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome,” 1 John 5:3.

Applying: Understand, that loving someone does not necessarily mean that you have to enjoy them or even like them. It means that, by the grace of God, you are able and willing to apply the virtues and nature of love to them. Remember, if God commands it, we are able to obey it.
