Title

The Depth of the Cross

Scripture
When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!"
(John 19:26-27)
Devotional
Three years earlier Jesus began His earthly ministry by heeding the request of His mother at the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee. (1) Now, during His last hours, He cared for her again. Here was the Christ, the Son of God, taking on Himself the sins of the world, yet He still was keeping the commandments: "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you." (2) Here He was, the Creator of the universe, about to die, and keeping a commandment that promised a long life. And not only did Jesus receive the promise of life, He received the promise of eternal life. Christ could not be separated from obeying His Father. He kept the commandments. He was altogether righteous, pure and holy.
It is for this cause that we can likewise receive the promise of eternal life. Do you see the depth of the cross?

(1) John 2:1-11, (2) Exodus 20:12
Thought For The Night
Contemplate the drops of blood, the blows in the face, the persistence of the whip, the crown of thorns, the derision and spitting.” St. Bonaventure (1221-1274)
