Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully with a shout of joy.

Nine times throughout the scriptures we hear the phrase, "A new song." Why? Does God literally mean that we are to sing new songs instead of the old? We have a natural tendency to resist change, even in music. We like the familiar. The problem arises in that the adage, "familiarity breeds contempt" is true. The more we sing a song the less thought we give to it and the more nostalgic it becomes. I do not believe that the Lord is telling us not to sing any songs of remembrance. The psalmist also reflects in sorrow, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"[17] However, the music of praise and praise itself is to increase and stay fresh.
