The teachings of the early church fathers tell us that Lebbaeus was a Hebrew from Edessa and that he was accomplished and learned. We are told that he came to Jerusalem to worship and heard John the Baptist. After hearing his preaching and seeing his character, he was baptized, and they called him Thaddaeus. After hearing Christ's teachings, and seeing His works, he followed Him, and became the tenth disciple. Much tradition and the gospel of Luke indicate that Thaddaeus was also known as Judas or Jude.[30] The name
