Here we find the clear purpose of the proverbs: to know wisdom and instruction that we may gain understanding. Those who seek after wisdom will find it here, if they are willing to receive instruction. To do so is the beginning of understanding. Knowledge is good, wisdom is better, but understanding is that which we ultimately seek. To understand is to know why, not just how. Understanding brings justice and gives wisdom to judgment with mercy. And mercy is that which inevitably triumphs over judgment.[1] Understanding will also bring success because of its byproduct, prudence. Prudence is the wise handling of practical matters. Therefore, the wealth of Proverbs is available for young and old alike. If you are willing to heed these instructions, wisdom has begun and understanding will follow.
