Staying Focused

Scripture
My son, let them not depart from your eyes---keep sound wisdom and discretion; so they will be life to your soul and grace to your neck. Then you will walk safely in your way, and your foot will not stumble.
(Proverbs 3:21-23)
Devotional
Wisdom and discretion do not come easily; they are not natural tendencies. Our nature is bent toward foolishness and wrongdoing. Therefore, wisdom and discretion have to be sought and developed. We have not only to diligently look for them; we have to keep our eyes fixed upon them. Unless we consistently look for and apply them daily in our lives, our old sinful natures will creep in, deceive us, and cause us to stumble and fall. And this is without exception. Consider Solomon, who in his youth and throughout the majority of his life applied wisdom and discretion, but in his latter days took his eyes off of them and stumbled. “When Solomon was old . . . his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God.”(1) Let us, therefore, be careful of the comforts of life that can bring apathy. Let us keep our eyes on wisdom and discretion; then we will walk safely and not stumble in our way.
