Scripture
For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
(Romans 11:29)
Devotional
What gifts, what callings are irrevocable? Was the writer speaking only of the nation of Israel? I think not. He speaks with too broad of a brush to be referring to one group of people. I am convinced that God is speaking to His Church as well as to Israel. Let’s consider these gifts and callings: If a gift is taken back it is not a gift, but at best a loan. We may not use our gifts or even misuse them, but, nevertheless, once they are received they belong to their possessors. The same applies to the callings of God. He does not call intending for those who have been called to turn back from their calling. God is not fickle. When He calls, He intends for those who have been called to fulfill His will in their calling. Furthermore, His gifts are not in short supply, nor are His callings. We may misuse, abuse or even walk away, but His intentions remain. Has God gifted you? Has He called you? What are you doing with these gifts and callings?
