It is good to learn and have a profitable skill—to be able to make something of use and value. The Bible has much to say about working with one’s hands.[1] From playing a musical instrument to being able to repair a mechanical device, these are talents that can bring rewards and pleasures. They have value and ought to be learned. There are skills and talents that we may now have and use to earn a livelihood, but these may not always be needed or profitable. There was a time for example when repairmen were in demand for everything from carburetors to appliances. Cars no longer have carburetors and appliances are for the most part not worth repairing. In this present day, it is computers and communication. These are good skills to have, but should not be the only ability one has. Focus on your greatest giftedness, but likewise acquire a few reserve skills. They can prove to be enjoyable and make good insurance policies.
