Poverty Is Relevant

Scripture
Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will also cry himself and not be heard.
(Proverbs 21:13)
Devotional
The poverty we have in the United States is considered wealth in many parts of the world. Therefore we have to ask, "What is poverty?" Is not owning your own home poverty? Maybe not having a car is poverty. Some would think that if you cannot afford a television you are impoverished. On the other hand, one may have a greater chance of getting out of their poverty without a television. The Bible tells us in 1 Timothy 6:8 where that line is, "Having food and clothing, with these we shall be content." Not having the essentials to sustain a relatively healthy life is poverty. If you disagree, then let it be according to your faith. If you feel that poverty entails more than this, then by all means meet the needs of those God has put on your heart to help. However, food and clothing must be the minimal line of poverty. Let us therefore reach out and help the impoverished, if need be with a handout and if possible with a hand-up.
