True Value

Scripture
The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, and a man is valued by what others say of him.
(Proverbs 27:21)
Devotional
This is an unfortunate fact of life, that our value is measured by what others say or think about us. Jesus said, “Woe to you when all men speak well of you, For so did their fathers to the false prophets.”(1) What matters more than man’s opinion is God’s.
Look at the people of scripture who were rejected by man, but accepted by God. Consider Moses, Lot, David and Jeremiah. These men were rejected by their own, hunted as enemies and imprisoned for their prophecies.
Flattery, praise and compliments are the furnaces and refining pots of our character. If we endure them in humility we will test as pure gold and refined silver. In a clear vernacular, don’t let it go to your head. Those that easily laud you one day will just as easily curse you the next. The only praiseworthiness we have is Christ in us the hope of glory.

Morning Study Guide
Defining:  “Value”: That which you greatly possess, your worth—The price that was paid for you by the Son of God.

Referencing: “He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver…And purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness,” Malachi 3:3.

Applying: Accept praise and adoration with humility and thanksgiving, but by all means, don’t let it land on your ego. Allow it to burn off as dross from the refiner’s furnace.
