Title

When You Can’t Sleep

Scripture
At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You
(Psalm 119:62)
Devotional
“When you’re worried and you can’t sleep, just count your blessings instead of sheep, and you’ll fall asleep counting your blessings.” Do you remember that song? It’s a good one, but this one is better. There is nothing better for sleeplessness than giving thanks to God. When the midnight hour comes and your mind will not shut down because of the events of the day, focus on your God. Begin to worship and praise Him. Give Him thanks for all His goodness. When bad dreams or the worries of the day awaken you, instead of tossing and turning, start praising and praying. There is no better time to offer a sacrifice of praise than during the midnight hours. What a wonderful time to spend alone with the Lord. I can promise you that when you sacrifice an hour of sleep to the Lord the remainder of your sleep will be sweet.

Defining: “Sleep”: That which is needed to replenish the body. It is a good thing, but like all good things too much of it brings sluggishness and laziness. It is what God appropriately gives His beloved (Psalm 127:2).

Referencing: “The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night His song shall be with me—A prayer to the God of my life,” Psalm 42:8.

Applying: When you are worried and you can’t sleep, just count your blessings… give thanks and pray.
