Title

Avoiding the Rod of His Wrath

Scripture
So the Lord could no longer bear it, because of the evil of your doings and because of the abominations which you committed.
(Jeremiah 44:22)
Devotional
It is foolish to think that God will continually wink at our sin or accept the unacceptable. First of all, God never tolerates sin. It is never acceptable to Him. He is slow to chastise us with the rod of His wrath.(1) However, this does not mean that He is weak or lax in His discipline. It demonstrates His patience toward us. God’s desire is that we would respond to the teaching and discipline of His Word. He would much rather us hear Him with an ear of obedience rather than submit to the rod of His wrath. However, there comes a point when He will no longer bear with our rebellion and evil doings. Because of His great love for us, He will chastise us with the rod of His wrath. Let us therefore hear Him and respond obediently, rather than ignore Him and have to be severely chastised.

Thought For The Day
“It is clear that when we think of the word ‘wrath’ as applicable to God, it must be divested of everything that is like human passion, and especially the passion of revenge.” Albert Barnes, (1798-1870), New Testament Commentary
