The Two Spectrums of Greatness

Scripture
Then a dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest.
(Luke 9:46)
Devotional
There have never been better trained disciples than the twelve that were mentored by Christ. Nevertheless, the ego of the flesh is strong. Mankind has always striven for greatness. It is part of our nature. This desire is both good and evil. It is good in that we are called to “Carry out great exploits.” It is evil in that greatness that is often driven by pride. Lucifer fell because he said in his heart, “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God, I will be like the Most High.” Therefore, carry out great and mighty exploits for the Lord. However, do not strive for the glory that is due the Lord God. Remember, Jesus then instructed His disciples by taking a little child and set him by Him as an example of the innocence we are to hold to in working our great exploits. Jesus furthermore said, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”
