Title

Violating Traditions

Scripture
For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.
(John 5:16)
Devotional
When the traditions of men supplant the will of God, the attitudes of men become embittered. From the songs we sing to the clothes we wear, they are, for the most part, mere traditions.
Traditions in themselves are usually good; that is why they become traditions. However, when these are what drive us, what drives us will eventually kill us. For example, show me a church steeped in tradition and I'll show you a dying church. The apostle Paul exemplifies the need for change when he said, "I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. Now this I do for the gospel's sake, that I may be partaker of it with you."(1)
Customs, clothing, music, and the like fluctuate with the passing of time. To ignore these changes is to ignore people. Let us understand that Jesus did not violate the commandments of God. This we are never permitted to do. However, we are to violate the traditions of men, if we must, to keep the commandments of God. This we are to always do.
