Peers Are Poor Counselors

But he rejected the advice which the elders had given him, and consulted the young men who had grown up with him

Devotional
Our peers are not the best source of counsel. A peer is someone with the same status and understanding that you have. If you are looking for agreement, go to your peers, but if you are looking for wise counsel, go to those who have been where you wish to go. Rehoboam was the son of one of the wisest men who had ever lived, Solomon. Solomon’s wisdom, like all wise people, came from wise associates. If King Rehoboam had listened to his father’s counselors, he would have held all twelve tribes together. Because he would not listen to them, but listened to his friends, he lost ten of the twelve tribes of Israel. Do not be foolish like king Rehoboam. Seek wise counsel from those who know more than you, from those who have been where you wish to go, and from those who have also received counsel from the wise.
