Title

Heredity or Environment?

Scripture
He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother advised him to do wickedly.
(2 Chronicles 22:3)
Devotional
Ahaziah came by his wickedness naturally. On a lighter side, this story reminds me of the young boy who came home with a poor report card. He climbed up on his father’s knee, opened his report card and boldly asked, “Father, what do you attribute this to, environment or heredity?” We, as parents have a great influence on our children, both through heredity and environment. Our children do inherit many of our traits and mannerisms. Even more so, they learn from the home environment. Children never stop being influenced by their parents. Ahaziah was forty-two years old and his mother had great influence on him, and he was the king. Sadly, her counsel was wicked. It is hard to fathom that a mother would direct her child to do wickedly. Yet, without Christ that is exactly what many parents do. Most do it in ignorance. Nevertheless they lead their children down the wrong road. This does not have to be the case in our homes.
