When Discouragers Come

Scripture
Then the people of the land tried to discourage the people of Judah. They troubled them in building.
(Ezra 4:4)
Devotional
The sin nature of man has not changed. Envy, jealousy and covetousness remain the disposition of man. People do not mind you getting ahead as long as you are not getting ahead of them. Regardless of whether it is in sports, business or even church, success is more than often met with resentment. People will attempt to discourage your success, especially if your success is exceeding theirs. They will say, “it is too risky,” or “you are not ready.” What they are really saying is, “it is too risky for me,” or “I’m not ready.” People’s attitude toward you depends more on character than relationship. I have found that close associates have often troubled my growth more than casual relationships. Just about anyone will help you grow below their level, but it takes godliness to help you grow to a higher level. Therefore, do not be discouraged and do not discourage. Likewise do not be troubled in building, and do not trouble the building of others. Be encouraged and be an encourager.
