The Name

Scripture
So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
(Acts 4:18)
Devotional
You can quote or invoke the name of just about anybody without censure, but the mere mention of the name of Jesus will always get attention. I am often asked to pray at differing public events: from city council meetings to business gatherings and from funerals to weddings. In these gatherings I have more than once been asked not to pray in the name of Jesus, but to pray generically, so that I would not offend anybody. To which I attempt to kindly respond, "I cannot pray except in the name of Jesus. Whom shall I offend, these good people or God?" I have always been permitted to pray; nevertheless I'm sure that I have not been asked to pray again. I would rather offend man than God. Think about the number of times you mention the name of Jesus in your daily conversations. Most likely and may I add, sadly, it is not very often. The reason being is that the mere mention of His name changes attitudes, convicts of sin and causes various emotions to arise. Why? There is no name like the Name of Jesus.
