Title

Do Not Steal Vengeance

Scripture
Do not say, "I will do to him just as he has done to me; I will render to the man according to his work.",
(Proverbs 24:29)
Devotional
Three times the scriptures clearly state, "'Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,' says the Lord."[1] When we take vengeance against another we are robbing God of that which He says is His. Our natural sinful nature wants to retort. When we are hurt our inclination is to respond at the very least in kind. Vengeance has a tendency to escalate. You hurt me, I hurt you more and you in turn respond more vehemently. Think about arguments, most start with a curt word and devolve into harsh hurtful threats. After a while, vengeance loses its origin and becomes the cause. It is ugly and increases its ugliness, hatful and deadly. It destroys friendships, businesses and marriages. Vengeance is never fruitful nor is it ever satisfied. It cannot be, because it was not devised for man. It belongs to God and God alone. Therefore, the next time you find yourself wanting revenge, stop; realize it is not yours for the taking. Let it alone, God will repay.
