What Price Freedom

Scripture
Let each one remain in the same calling in which he was called. Were you called while a slave? Do not be concerned about it; but if you can be made free, rather use it.
(1 Corinthians 7:20-21)
Devotional
There are some things that are much more important to us than to God. We are concerned with our well-being; God is concerned with us being well. We desire peace through happiness; God desires us to have peace without regard to happiness. For example, our text strongly indicates that slavery is no big deal to God. Therefore it should be no big deal to the one enslaved. Indenture had very little to do with freedom to the first century Christian. Let me qualify; I do not condone slavery. However, God is showing us that our life’s condition is secondary to our spiritual condition. More important than human status is heavenly status. Now, we are instructed to become free if we are able. Yet, we must seek freedom from God’s perspective more than our own. “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
