Title

A Plurality of Leadership

Scripture
Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people: rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
(Exodus 18:25)
Devotional
In the kingdom of God, there has always been a plurality of leadership. Nevertheless a plurality of leadership does not mean that there is an equality of leadership. Delegated authority is not ultimate authority. Whether in the church or in business, a plurality of leadership when rightly applied is the best form of government. Any entity run entirely by one person will never surpass that person's ability to govern. It is for this reason that many businesses and churches fail to grow. For example, the greatest majority of churches in the United States have less than one hundred people attending them. The reason being is one leader, one pastor. Likewise with small businesses, it takes more than mom and pop to build a business. Moses' father-in-law also instructed him with regard to the character of those leading with him, "Select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness."[2]
