Legitimate Questions

Scripture
And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
(Luke 10:25)
Devotional
There is a very fine line between asking a question and questioning. The lawyer was challenging Jesus in order to trap Him with his questioning; he was not seeking the truth. He was attempting to malign the teacher. The connotation of the word translated "tested" is to tempt or to strive or to try. Have you noticed that whenever Jesus' integrity or authority was being questioned, that He would respond with a valid question? Jesus knew and we should learn to know the difference between a legitimate question and being questioned. One seeks an answer the other seeks to assault. One investigates the other intends to intimidate. A true question seeks an answer; false questioning attempts to indict. Let us be careful in our question asking. Let us make sure that we are seeking legitimate answers instead of making accusations. Always remember, a valid answer requires a valid question.
