Title

Avoiding Self Justification

Scripture
You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts.
(Luke 16:15)
Devotional
I have sadly noticed that there are many good intentioned people who proclaim that they are seeking counsel, when in reality all they are seeking is agreement. More simply said, they are looking to justify themselves in the sight of man. How foolish of us to attempt to justify ourselves before men when we know that we cannot fool God. Yet, we try when we knowingly do wrong and endeavor to justify it by seeking agreement from man. We say things like, “I know that the Bible says this or that, but I believe my situation is different.” If we persist on fooling ourselves, God will turn us over to the perverted desire of our hearts. We must avoid this folly and seek the truth. No matter what the agreement of man, we must trust the counsel of God. Our conscience may violate the Word of the Lord, but God’s Word cannot violate our conscience.
