Title

Righteous Pretenders

Scripture
So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words…
(Luke 20:20)
Devotional
Without sounding overly skeptical, may I suggest that we be somewhat cautious with regard to those who come across as overly righteous. Likewise whenever someone appears to be exceedingly complimentary or flattering, it would be wise not to take it to heart. Flattery and high adulation are a sure sign of an ulterior motive. Read the context of our text, you will find the epitome of flattery and its deception. Following the patronizing compliments, Jesus’ false admirers asked a lying question. A lying question is a question that in its self is equitable and fair, nevertheless its purpose is false. A lying question is not seeking the truth, but it is a leading question seeking to find fault and seize on the words of the one being interrogated. Therefore, do not be impressed with flirtatious words or flowery compliments, instead, see them as reasons for caution. Likewise, watch out for the questions that follow.
