Delivering The Poor and Needy

Scripture
“Deliver the poor and needy; free them from the hand of the wicked.”
(Psalm 82:4:)
Devotional
The welfare system is not delivering the poor and needy from the hand of the wicked. In fact, it is keeping them under the power of wickedness. To free the poor is to get them out of their poverty and need. It is much easier to give a handout than a hand up. It soothes the conscience, but does little to relieve the poor from their poverty. ?Poverty is more than the absence of finances. It is the absence of the ability and resources needed to acquire finances. Poverty is not to be awarded; it is to be reversed. Nevertheless, because of our sinful nature, we will vote ourselves a stipend whenever possible. ?Herein is the demise of government and the ruin of society. Proverbs explains it very well, “Much food is in the fallow ground of the poor, and for lack of justice there is waste.” Let us do justly to the poor and needy by getting them out of their poverty and need.

If only we could get our Government Officials to view this problem the same way. God helps those who help themselves. Always giving without one earning is not or never was God's intention; It is called enabeling. My thought is that if one is to recieve the benefits of Welfare then one should earn it by cleaning our streets, volunteering for the less fortunate in nursing homes or homeless shetlers or something that is giving back to those of us that work for THEIR paycheck. Maybe if they apply themselves instead of just taking handouts they may find that they do have something to contribute to society and may try just a little harder to make a difference in this broken world. Become the solution, not the problem.
