The Power of The Apology

Scripture
He who loves transgression loves strife, And he who exalts his gate seeks destruction.
(Proverbs 17:19)
Devotional
Nothing can get us into more trouble than our mouths. Running the mouth before engaging the brain has brought the demise of many a wordy fool. Those who love to contend and joust with their words inevitably bring destruction. We are to give an apology not a debate. 1 Peter 3:15 instructs, "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense (apology) to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear."[1] The key is found in the phrase, "With meekness and fear." An apology is not being sorry for what you are saying; on the contrary it is speaking the truth boldly yet with an attitude of humility. This kind of a defense cannot be easily defeated. Therefore let us not be found haughty in word, but let us be found peaceful. Remember, "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."[2]
