Thoughtful Communication

Scripture
Like a crane or a swallow, so I chattered; I mourned like a dove; my eyes fail from looking upward. O Lord, I am oppressed; undertake for me!
(Isaiah 38:14)
Devotional
The psalmist using metaphors shares his heart to the Lord, calling on Him to come to his aid. I like metaphors; they help us through the use of mere words and communicate our hearts. Sometimes explicit words do not define how we feel, as do contrasts, allegories and metaphors. That is why the Lord spoke in parables. He did not do so to confuse us, but that we would understand through word pictures and illustrations with which we could relate. Think of the word usage of the scriptures: “They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”(1) “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge.”(2) I enjoy running; it is my life’s metaphor. I see in it the ups and downs, hurts and sorrows, successes and failures of every day life. I both physically and spiritually run with the Lord. When I grow weary, He undertakes me.

(1) Isaiah 40:31, (2) Psalm 91:4
