Title

Matthew

Scripture
Now the names of the twelve apostles are... Matthew the tax collector.
(Matthew 10:2-3)
Devotional
Matthew the son of Alphaeus, also known as Levi was a despised tax collector. He was obviously a wealthy man who followed Christ immediately and gave Him a great feast at his home. It was this Matthew of whom the Pharisees complained that Jesus was eating and drinking with sinners; to which He replied, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance."[25] Matthew functioned anonymously throughout Christ's ministry, but recorded it masterfully in the Book that bears his name. His account of the Sermon on the Mount establishes the foundation of the Christian life. Of the three Gospels, Matthew most clearly shows Jesus as the one of whom Moses in the law and the prophets did write.[26] To read his account is to know his heart and the One of whom he wrote. The name Matthew means, "the gift of God." And that is what his gospel account is, "a gift of God."
