The Tenth Commandment

Scripture
"You shall not covet."
(Exodus 20:17)
Devotional
Of all the Decalogue, the Tenth has got to be the most difficult to recognize. In all my years of pastoring and counseling, I have never had anyone come to me and say, "Pastor, I'm having a problem with coveting." Coveting is so insidious that Jesus had to warn us, "Take heed and beware of covetousness."[18] If someone is committing adultery or stealing they know that they are violating the Commandments. But coveting, it is so sneaky. It has so many disguises. It can hide in a good desire or a noble dream. Covetousness can find strong roots in honest ambitions, the grandest goals or even the best hopes. The key to overcoming the menacing ways of covetousness is through the realm of godly contentment.[19] We are instructed in Hebrews, "Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have."[20] Watch out, be on guard, keep a close check on your motives and remember, "You shall not covet."
