The Lord did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those who are here today, all of us who are alive.(Deuteronomy 5:3)

Each generation has to inter into a new covenant relationship with the Creator of the universe. We cannot stand on the relationships of our ancestors. We can and are to build, "On the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone."[30] Nevertheless our relationship to Christ cannot be inherited; it has to be established afresh by covenant. God always and only deals with His people through covenant. Christians have always been and will always be a covenant people. We cannot stand on the previous covenant relationship of others.
