Numbers Count

Scripture
Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel…
(Numbers 1:2)
Devotional
It has been said that when someone says that it is not about the money, but it is the principle of the thing, you can be assured, it is about the money. The same goes when you hear a preacher state that numbers are not important; it is most likely because he has none. Numbers matter very much. They are God’s instruments of measure. There is information in numbers as well as power. Numbers more than often reflect success. Whether in the parable of the talents or the bearing of fruit, the amount returned makes the difference. The Bible teaches that there is strength in numbers when it says, “A three fold cord is not quickly broken.” Numbers reflect growth as well as decline, wealth and poverty. It is wise to know the numbers because it is wise to know the condition of your flock. Therefore, take a census of that which God has placed in your care.

Although I see the soundness in this devotional, I can't help but think of when David took a census and the nation of Israel was punished for his actions,... or lack of faith in God. Maybe it was his pride?

David taking the census was in direct disobedience to the Lord's command. Let us remember the we interpret the Old Testament in light of the New. The point of the devotion is that numbers count. They are the mode of measurement. They are not to be scores, but measurements. From the numbers of decisions for Christ to the amount of an offering. Numbers are simply a matter of stewardship: Whether the fish and the loves or the decisions on the day of Penticost.
