The Three Aspects of Direction

Scripture
Hear and give ear; do not be proud, for the Lord has spoken.
(Jeremiah 13:15)
Devotional
Godly direction comes with three aspects: what to do, what not to do, and the reason why. Our text simply instructs: “Hear and give ear.” This is what we are to do. Not only hear, but also listen with an ear toward obedience. Likewise, we are instructed, “Not to be proud.” Pride is the sin that caused the archangel Lucifer to fall from heaven and become the archenemy of creation. Why are we to do these things? The answer is simple, because, “The Lord has spoken.” If we would simply hear and give ear, that is, really listen obediently and if we would put aside our egos, there is nothing that we could not accomplish. The Lord is speaking. Are you listening? If not, you may be too filled with pride to hear. If so, humble yourself. Here is how: “Hear and give ear; do not be proud, for the Lord has spoken.”
