But they said, “We will drink no wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father commanded us…”(Jeremiah 35:6)
Devotional
These sons of Jonadab lived in a city named after a man named Jabez. They may have even been his descendents. I would not be surprised, for Jabez like these Rechabites, was a godly man. 1 Chronicles tells us all that we know about this man named Jabez. It says, “Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, ‘Because I bore him in pain.’ And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, ‘Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!’ So God granted him what he requested.” There is much to learn from these sons of Rechab and this man named Jabez. Make Jabez’s prayer your prayer and make the Rechabites' obedience your obedience.Daily Reading
