Title

Understanding Temptation

Scripture
The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment.
(2 Peter 2:9)
Devotional
When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, one of the things He taught them was to say, “Do not lead us into temptation.” Therefore, God knows what we can and cannot handle. He knows our limits. For example, God will not give us wealth if that wealth will cause us to stumble. He will not prosper if that prosperity exults us above measure. Success, more than often, gives birth to sinful pride. And pride turns us away from God. God knows our hearts. He knows that if we cannot be thankful and godly in our present state, that we will not be godly or thankful in greater prosperity. We cannot pray “Do not lead us into temptation,” and seek that which will cause us to be tempted beyond our ability to overcome that temptation. That would be unjust. Therefore, let us humble ourselves and not be led into temptation.
