Life Is Too Valuable

Scripture
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long at the wine, Those who go in search of mixed wine.
(Proverbs 23:29-30)
Devotional
Drunkenness is a scourge of mankind. Alcohol-related deaths outnumber deaths related to drugs four-to-one. "Alcohol is a factor in more than half of all domestic violence and sexual assault cases. In 1995, four out of every ten people on probation said they were drinking when they committed a violent crime.  Between accidents, health problems, crime, and lost productivity, researchers estimate alcohol abuse costs the economy $167 billion a year.”[1] As children of the King, we are royalty.[2] And “It is not for kings to drink wine, Nor for princes intoxicating drink.”[3] Every one of us knows someone who has had his or her life ruined by alcohol. Why then would we treat it so glibly? Is it a sin to drink a glass of wine? No. But if it causes another to stumble, I will not. Life is too valuable.

On August 24th, Linda said:
Once in a great while, I have had a sip of wine or ocassionally use alcohol to cook (the effect is expected to be gone after cooking for 30 min or less). Years ago, having been very shy, I may have a drink to ease the discomfort. I decided that I cannot feel any sense of satisfaction from superficially "overcoming" a situation, but only if I embrace personal growth. I then can be excited about the victory and ready for the next hurdle God sends my way. I also feel that we are role models and others follow what we do. Even though a drink may seem harmless, it can encourage someone who it can be detrimental to. Not being in a mental state, can mean a missed opportunity -- either you don't see it due to an altered mental state -- or could God use someone more prepared to do his mountain moving work? I would choose to use someone who was firing on all cylinders when I have something to accomplish. Also, money can be better spent. Adding up the yearly tab for some could represent many things, even a trip around the globe:)
