Building a Secure Home

Scripture
The beams of our houses are cedar and our rafters of fir.
(Song of Solomon 1:17)
Devotional
The beloved of King Solomon was very secure in her marriage. Her security however was not in the structure of her house, but in the structure of her marriage. When the marriage is in order the house will be in order. A mansion with a contentious marriage is a mere shack. On the other hand, a lowly cabin in a loving marriage is a luxurious castle. Like the beams and rafters in Solomon’s houses, a marriage must be built on a firm foundation. That foundation is Christ. However, the foundation is to be built upon, and love is the building blocks of marriage. Love is not something we fall into; love is something we choose to do. If we fail to work at it, it will decay and be valueless. If you desire a secure home, build it with the building blocks of the love of the Song of Solomon. Furthermore, the beams and rafters of you mansion will be of cedar and fir.

Here is a great quote I recently read on marriage:

“When I have learnt to love God better than my earthly dearest, I shall love my earthly dearest better than I do now. Insofar as I learn to love my earthly dearest at the expense of God and instead of God, I shall be moving towards the state in which I shall not love my earthly dearest at all. When first things are put first, second things are not suppressed but increased.” C. S. Lewis,

When I wrote this study guide the the bell tower of Pisa was falling. However it has been undergirded and stabilized with a new costly foundation. It doesn't lean quite as much as it once did. Therefore our lives we can likewise be righted. We can be stabilized and undergirded when we make Christ Jesus the foundation of our lives.
